Answers to common questions

Why can I no longer see the Calendar on some devices?
With all technology improvements there is usually some sort of trade off and in order to bring you an improved "Community Resource" we have had to make certain technology decisions that may affect some users who are still making use of older web browsers or other outdated software.

Please ensure you keep all your software secure & up to date and preferably use [ Brave ¹ / Chrome or Firefox ] as you browser since our product is mainly geared towards them.

Also please ensure you browser supports and has Javascript enabled as our new Calendar platform requires this to function.
¹   Brave is becoming our #1 browser choice as it's lightning fast, blocks trackers and also uses the Chromium engine and the Chrome Store for Extensions (Plugins) etc
How do I find out how to add events to the calendar?
The first thing you need to do is familiarise yourself with Our Posting Guide which contains all the information on what is required and how to go about posting public Facebook events to our calendars as well as the relevant download links to the [ Brave ¹ / Chrome or Firefox ] extension which will be used to add events to our calendars. It also features our Do's and Don'ts which contains important policy information which you also need to familiarise yourself with.
¹   Brave uses the Chromium engine and the Chrome Store for Extensions (Plugins) etc
I have submitted a User Request Form to be granted permission. How long before I can start posting?

This is a Community Resource which is run by Tanguer@s on a voluntary basis. As such it may take a little while for one of the administrators to notice and process your request. We will try to get around to it as quickly as possible, but please be mindful that we all have busy lives and that it may take a while before your request is processed.

NB Just in case or if you do not hear from us in a timely manner please do send us a message to confirm we have received your requests and are processing it!

Where do I find the download links to the Brave / Chrome or Firefox extensions?
Brave / Chrome extension: Checker Plus for Google Calendar™
Firefox add-on: Firefox Add-on
¹   Brave is becoming our #1 browser choice as it's lightning fast, blocks trackers and also uses the Chromium engine and the Chrome Store for Extensions (Plugins) etc
What about instructions for using the extension, where can I find these?
The extension download page also provides a link to the extension developers site and user guide.

In addition to this we have created a set of "Screen Shots" to further aid the developer's usage instructions.
I have followed all the instructions, but am still unable to post events. What am I doing wrong?
Assuming you have read & understood Our Posting Guide and have submitted a User Request Form request for access to our calendars via your Google user account (email) and you received confirmation from us that your credentials have been added and are ready to use, you will need the following to add public Facebook events to our calendars:
  • Download & install the "Checker Plus" browser extension for your preferred browser [ Brave ¹ / Chrome or Firefox ].
  • Login to the extension using your approved Google credentials
¹   Brave uses the Chromium engine and the Chrome Store for Extensions (Plugins) etc
Generally that's all you need to start adding events, but in case you still cannot add events to our calendars you can try to pinpoint & eliminate any issues by doing the following:
  • Before you try to use the already installed "Checker Plus" browser extension make sure to login to your Google account first to eliminate any issues with your Google account/profile.
  • Check to make sure you can add public Facebook events to your own personal Google Calendar which comes with your Google account before you try to add events to our Calendars. This will eliminate any extension specific issues.
  • If you managed to do both the above but are still having issues try to open/edit the event you added to the personal calendar using "Checker Plus" and try to move it to the correct calendar by selecting the appropriate calendar from the relevant dropdown and taking note of all the available options
If you are still experiencing issues after following all the above, please get in touch via our Facebook inbox together with any relevant screen shots that can help us identify and assist you with your issue.
Can I add events directly to your calendars instead of using the "Checker Plus" extension?
No this goes against our policy and we do NOT approve of any manually added events to our public calendars.

However as part of our public [ Tango Lesson ] calendars we are currently piloting individual calendars for specific Tango Schools / Academies. These allow greater flexibility & control to established Tango Schools/Academies to add their own events and/or synchronise their own calendars. As such these calendars and ONLY these calendars are allowed to host events other than Facebook events, but even so we ask that all events data be in the public domain already as part of our strict Open Data Policy!
The process is too cumbersome / technical. Can someone else not add my event to the calendaer?
A few contributors reported the current process being too cumbersome / technical. We are reviewing the process but given existing workloads / commitments are likely to stick to the current process for some time.

As an alternative we created a Facebook Group to share your events to. The aim of this group is for power contributors & administrators to locate missing events and potentially add them on your behalf. We cannot make any guarantees whatsoever that these will be added to our Calendars but it does not hurt and besides sharing your events there alone should reaches a wider audience.

I have noticed some really cool new features on the calendar recently. How do I add these to my events?
We have developed some exciting new features such as Event Images, Ticket Booking links and even detailed Event Schedule (Timeline View) for bigger events such as [ Marathons ], [ Encuentros ] and [ Festivals ]. However these are still very much experimental and currently only available to developers & administrators.

Some features may end up being rolled out as part of our core offering, some could be made available as early release to administrators & power contributors and at a later stage we could potentially make these features available to contributors who do not have time to actively get involved with our community project but are willing to support us via financial donations. For the time being all experimental features are available to admins only and used entirely at their discretion. Any planned changes will be announced via our Facebook page or website.
Why are there so many (unofficial) events listed on your calendar all of a sudden?
As already mentioned our calendar has been transformed into a Community Resource now which relies on local Tanguer@s & organisers to contribute public Facebook events. The original team behind the London Calendar has moved on or away from London and we no longer have the time to monitor events like before. At the start of the year we added some of the established Milonga/Practica events to the calendar marked "unofficial" and we hope these will be taken over by the organisers in due time. In the mean time we suggest checking with organisers concerning events marked "unofficial" to ensure there have not been any changes and that the events are taking place before heading there.
Why do my events appear greyed out and not in colour like others events?
This is an indication that the event has no associated public Facebook event and as such it does NOT meet our policy requirements. We have already started to crack down on events that were not added to our calendar using the "Checker Plus" extension and to ensure events meet our Open Data Policy.
Why are the links inside my event disabled?
Same as with the greyed out events, this is an indication that the event has no associated public Facebook event and as such it does NOT meet our policy requirements. Due to this reason any links within are automatically disabled. This is part of our effort to crack down on events that were not added to our calendar using the "Checker Plus" extension and to ensure events meet our Open Data Policy.
Why does the address not come across & why do some events have a Location/Map button and others do not?
The reason that the Address does not come across for some events is that Facebook only exports the venue or "know As" name instead of the actual address for any events that has this prepended in front of the address.

This is a bug and it has been reported to Facebook, but as it only affects the eternal export it is unlikely to be resolved any time soon. The work around is to edit the event in "Checker Plus" post import and to change the "Location" entry to only hold the actual address. Alternatively if you create your own Facebook events you can elect to only specify the actual address without any Venue or Organisation names.

A "Location" button will only appear if the page detects a valid address.
Why do event images fail to load and appear blank or as empty placeholder?

Event image headers are a new / experimental feature being evaluated for wider adaptation. The images themselves are hosted externally and we have no control over them. However, we do check image links for load error prior to including them on our site to mitigate against external resource issues.

Before you report any image load issues please attempt to use another device and a different browser as we already received reports concerning browser spcific issues. In most cases images loaded just fine using either an alternative device or by using a different browser. To troubleshoot we recommend opening our Calendar in a private browser window to eliminate any extension / add-on specific issues and if this resolves the matter you can attempt to pinpoint the issue by disabling each one individually until you discover the one causing the problem.

We already know that the "Facebook Container" add-on for Firefox is problematic!

If the issue is Firefox specific but not caused by an add-on, you can also try refreshing the browser using instructions on this [ Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings ] Mozilla support page.

Why does my Checker Plus popup appear blank or say access not granted?

The main reason for this is that the extension hasn't been installed/configured correctly. Please ensure the extension is installed & functioning correctly and that you have logged in using the Google Account (email) you provided/registered with us. Check these credentials appear under the Checker Plus [ Account ] tab under the Checker Plus [ Options ] settings which can be accessed by clicking on the Checker Plus icon on the browser toolbar and then the [  ] icon which opens the Checker Plus settings.

Attempt to resolve issues with the Checker Plus extension by selecting [ Grant Access Again ] in the Account section of the extension settings or by reinstalling the extension.

Why are none of the calendars visible even though I was granted access and Checker Plus is installed & working correctly?

If you managed to installed & login to Checker Plus extension using the credential you provided are able to add events to you private calendar but cannot view our calendars, which we granted you permission to, it may be due to an invitation message that was sent to your Google email that is still awaiting verification.

Please check your inbox to see if you missed the invitation email and if so please verify your access request to proceed.

Why does Checker Plus no longer show the London Tango Calendars in the select calendar dropdown?

If you used the Checker Plus extension previously but find that you can no longer see the [London Tango Calendars] in the selectable calendar dropdown, make sure you can still see the calendar in the Google calendar application and that you still have permission to access it. Also check to make sure you Google login credentials are correct inside the Checker Plus Account settings page. If you are in any doubt you can use the [Grant Access Again] button to refresh the permissions. It this does not resolve the issue, try to re-install the Checker Plus plugin from scratch.

Some people have noted that they can only access calendars in the [My Calendars] section of Google Calendars and not the [Other Calendars]. If you have tried all the above and still cannot create events in the [London Tango Calendars] using the Checker Plus plugin, try to create the event in your Personal Calendar instead. If this works try to copy the event over using the Google Calendarapplication. This workaround will allow you to create & psot events, but please do report any such issues to us so we may investigate further and perhaps alert the developer of the plugin if need be.

NB A word of caution, only post & copy events created by Checker Plus using public Facebook events. If you manually create events using the Google Calendar app, all links within your events will automatically be disabled on the [London Tango Calendar] and the event entry itself will be muted i.e. appear greyed out!

I absolutely love the Featured Events page showing Visual Event Cards for popular events, but why does it occasionally take so long to load?

In an ideal world we would probably host all our content internally or via a global network provider, but our misson has always been to keep the costs of our websites down to next to ZERO and to somehow do this without relying on advertising. Some might think we are mad! Well OK Tango mad perhaps, but in all seriousness we have manage to build our [TangoAmore♡] & [London Tango Calendar] by utilising freely available resources and as such we are somewhat limited to what we have control over.

If network traffic or bandwidth ever become an issue during certain parts of the day or are unacceptably slow or if any of the services from major providers like Google are having issues, our service will be affected to some degree. However we feel this is completely acceptable and generally will not casue anyone much trouble. If however you are experiencing prolonged issues we suggest trying the following.

First of all the best performance boost you can give yourself is to choose your web browser carefully. Historically we always advocated Mozilla / Firefox and we are still fans, but there is no denying that Chrome is a major player these days and in many respects matches or even betters the Mozilla offering. However there is a new kid on the block and Firefox & Chrome better watch out. Yes it's a "Brave" new world out there and finally we have a browser focused on cutting out all the 3'rd party tracking etc which has the potential to dramatically improve respose times, it seriously is lightning fast . If you haven't tried "Brave" yet what are you waiting for?

It uses Chromium and shares the Chome webstore, so we strongly recommend it as you could also run the Checker Plus plugin and others we urge people to use. We cannot recommend this browser enough and using it sends out a clear message to all other companies. We love it ♡

The other thing to do when there are major network/service issues is to use the actual Tango Calendar pages instead of the new Featured Events page as it has to go fetch & load all the various images which in itself can be network intensive operation.

This means you will temporarily loose all the cool new advance Search & Filter options which are invaluable, especially on the global [TangoAmore ♡] website, but it is only temporary until the normal services resume. The legacy Tango Calendars work and still do a great job, so it is not such an issue unless you need to search for specific details and even so any service disruptions do not tend to last very long sice we ony use the most well known providers who have the resources to restore services in the shortest time possible.

At the end of the day the tradeoff for allowing us to produce our website at next to ZERO cost was minimal service disruption. It is a no brainer and we would challenge anyone to produce a similarly effect website without relying on annoying advertisments.

Where can I download this new Brave browser I keep on hearing about?

Brave is lightning fast, blocks trackers and also uses Chromium engine and shares the Chome webstore, so it can also run the Checker Plus extension (plugin) etc. We cannot recommend this browser enough. Seriously we simply ℓσνє ♡ it!
